The starting point was how weather impacts our daily life, affecting our mood. As a reflection, I proposed ‘Ask the Cock’ an ode to an object that always fascinated me: the traditional Portuguese meteorological cock. This hanger / umbrella port, aims to avoids the typical question ‘How’s the weather today?’ Before leaving the house, the user just needs to check the colour on the cock and dress accordingly – when the cock is blue the sky is clear while if it changes to pink, the possibility of raining is really high.

The contact with the artisans was done by Show me gallery in Braga (city in the north of Portugal). The fact that the project is composed of three elements (wooden dish and chicken being the last one coated with cobalt chloride, iron structure) allowed me to work with two different techniques: carving and metalwork.

By developing several projects with artisans from different areas I realize the priceless mastery of this men acquired over generations that must be stimulated and revisited in order to avoid there lost.

The small production of handcrafted items is undoubtedly a process to be taken into account in the upcoming economical future. In a society that values more and more handmade and zero environmental impact products, the synergies created between designers and craftsmen are essential. The development of projects that merge these two realities is the key to create a parallel economy able to satisfy new niche markets.

Este projecto é uma reflexão sobre o impacto do tempo atmosférico no nosso humor e vida quotidiana. Como resposta, proponho ‘Ask the Cock’ (pergunta ao galo) uma ode a um objecto que sempre me tem fascinado, o tradicional galo meteorologico português . Este cabide/porta chapéu-de-chuva evita a típica pergunta ‘Como está o tempo hoje? Antes de sair de casa basta olhar para a cor do galo e escolher levar ou não o casaco e o chapéu-de-chuva.

O contacto com os artesãos foi feito através da galeria Show me de Braga. O facto do projecto ser composto por 3 elementos (prato e galo em madeira sendo o ultimo revestido a cloreto de cobalto, estrutra em ferro forjado) permitiu-me trabalhar com 2 tecnicas diversas: entalhe e serralharia.

Ao desenvolver diversos projectos com artesãos das mais diferentes áreas apercebo-me do valor incalculável da mestria adquirida ao longo de gerações destes homens, que não forem estimuladas e revisitados cairão no esquecimento.

A pequena produção possibilitada pelo fabrico artesanal é sem duvida um método a ter em conta na economia do futuro. Numa sociedade que cada vez mais valoriza o ‘handmade’ e produtos de impacto zero as sinergias criadas entre artesão e designer são essenciais. O desenvolvimento de projectos que unam estas duas realidades e a chave para criar uma economia paralela capaz de satisfazer novos nichos do mercado.
